Why Do I Need an Extraction?

Extractions can happen for many different reasons. One common reason for extractions is severe decay. When the infection reaches the pulp of your tooth, it can often be remedied by a root canal. Sometimes, though, that just isn't enough. An extraction gets rid of the bad bacteria and decay before it can spread or get worse. Another reason for extraction is gum disease. Gum disease can lead to bone and tooth loss, and over time, can spread and start to decay the inside of teeth as well, rather than just surrounding it. When this happens, it leaves us short of options, often. Sometimes your tooth is broken in a way that can’t be easily fixed, and it is better for your overall oral health just to pull it entirely. Crowding or badly positioned teeth can also lead to teeth getting pulled. Sometimes it is to prepare your mouth for an orthodontic procedure like braces, and other times it is to prevent further pain or damage, like in the case of wisdom teeth.

How is it Taken Out?

We make the area very numb with a local anesthetic. Then we classify whether your tooth requires a non-surgical or surgical extraction. If it is easy to remove, it is non-surgical. If it is impacted or broken, it may be surgical. While a non-surgical can become surgical, it can’t go the other way. If it is a surgical procedure, we make an incision and open up your gums and a bit of bone to remove the tooth in its entirety. If it is a simple removal, then we rock the tooth back and forth until it is free of everything holding it in place. Afterward, it may bleed and be sore for a while. That can be taken care of with some mild over the counter medications, but we may prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection of the site.

It is easy to get psyched out before a procedure as altering as this one, but it is important to remember that here at Bradshaw Family Dental, your health is our number one priority, and we want to make you as comfortable as can be. We will take care of you from start to finish, and should there be any complications after the fact, we will take care of you then too. Your safety, health, and comfortability are all important to us, and we will make sure that your experience goes off without a hitch.
