How a Toothache is Showing You That Your Mouth Needs HelpA toothache is a common problem many people have, and they have many causes. A toothache can be a symptom of physical damage to a tooth or even wisdom teeth coming in. However, one of the most common reasons for a person to have a tooth ache is due to tooth decay.

Tooth decay can vary in severity, and the only way to know what needs to be done to repair the problem is to come in for help. In the meantime, we can give you an idea of what to expect when you come in with a toothache.

What Causes A Toothache

Toothaches are generally caused by an excess buildup of bacteria in the mouth. This bacteria likes to feed of the food left in your mouth after you eat, and in the process of them eating your scraps, they also eat away at your teeth. In the earliest stages of tooth decay, most people will experience a cavity. Luckily, cavities are easily fixable with a little bit of filling material. Fillings can be made of many different materials and can be matched to your preferences. Most people prefer a filling material that matches the color of their teeth so that it goes unnoticed.

More extreme cases of tooth decay may require different, more invasive procedures. A common procedure conducted on decayed teeth that have also become infected is a root canal. The purpose of a root canal is to clear infected tissue underneath the tooth, so it won't spread. After a root canal is performed, a person will generally need a crown to cover the tooth so it will be protected from further infection.
