Do Your Teeth Hurt When the Weather Gets Cold?

Posted on 11/10/2016 by Dr. Andrew Zeiger
A woman suffering from sensitive teeth due to cold weather.
Cold weather sensitivity is something that is relatively common as people age. They step outside when there is a brisk wind and suddenly they have paid coursing through their jaw that hits them down to their very core.

If you have been dealing with this for years, or if this is the first time it has happened, be happy in that there is help out there.

Understanding Cold Weather Tooth Sensitivity

Teeth are porous. They have tiny holes in them that you cannot see unless you have a microscope. Each tooth is full of millions of tiny holes that allow your teeth to be alive.

The enamel protects the dentin inside the tooth, but the holes allow for nutrients to get to the root of your tooth.

When teeth get more sensitive, it is often because those holes are a bit larger than they used to be. That allows substances, even air, to reach the nerve of the tooth and cause you pain.

Your dentist can help you manage your sensitivity. They can help seal your teeth up to prevent as much of the cold from getting through as possible, and they can tell you what type of products you should be using on your teeth to keep the sensitivity down. You can often use mouthwashes and toothpastes that help protect your sensitive teeth and reduce the overall sensitivity you experience.

Contact our office and schedule an appointment now to be seen. Your dentist can only help you if you go in for an appointment and tell them what is going on. Explain to them what causes the pain, and how often it hits. From there, they can look around your mouth and make sure there is no other reason for the pain.
