Air abrasion is ideal for kids and adult patients who are fearful of the dental drill. This tool works well to remove decay from small cavities, and to prepare a tooth for bonding or dental sealants. This tool is not ideal for patients who have deep cavities or are being prepped for a dental crown, an inlay or an onlay. Our dentists, Dr. Zeiger and Dr. Frausto are happy to discuss this technology with you and determine if you are a candidate for this system.
How does this system work?Air Abrasion allows us to drill, without the drill. Using an air blasting system, along with small aluminum oxide particles, which is an abrasive material, we are able to blast the decay from a specified area. The blast is a very small and directed blast, so the patient feels no discomfort. Working as a mini sandblaster, directed compressed air, along with fine particles to clear away the decay, is passed through a dental instrument. The debris is then continuously suctioned away, leaving no debris in your mouth.
Is this painful?Surprisingly no! The idea of sand blasting your teeth may sound intimidating, but the process is not. Many patients do not even require the same anesthesia that a traditional drill procedure would. Additionally, air abrasion:
|•||Does not cause a vibration in your mouth while the work is done.|
|•||Has no smell, many patients do not like the smell of heat that comes from drilling.|
|•||Has no sound, it does not produce that drilling noise that causes patients to feel anxious.|
|•||Does not apply any pressure to your tooth or inside your mouth.|
We want our patients to feel comfortable in their dental care. When a patient is nervous or anxious of a pending procedure, the chances of them ignoring issues or hoping problems will go away increases. Air Abrasion is a way to alleviate those fears, together, we can decrease your worries, and remove those things that can make a patient anxious. Our doctors, Dr. Zeiger and Dr. Frausto, want you to come, take care of both small and large issues, and have a healthy mouth. The health of your mouth is a factor in your overall health.
