Managing the Pain of Your Cavity Until We Can Tend to It

Managing the Pain of Your Cavity Until We Can Tend to ItCavities can be painless, and you don't even know you have one until we do some X-rays, but they can also hurt a lot. If we haven't seen you in a while and you have a painful cavity that is affecting the root of the tooth, there are some things you can do to manage the pain of your cavity until we can tend to it.

A cavity happens when the protective layer of the tooth, the enamel, softens because of acids that promote the growth of bacteria. When a cavity hurts, it is because the decay has reached the inner layers of the teeth where the nerves are located. It is essential that we treat your cavity as soon as possible to avoid any other problems from developing.

Home Remedies for Pain from a Cavity

While you wait for your appointment, the pain from a cavity will be uncomfortable, but there are certain things you can do in the meantime.

•  Use over-the-counter analgesics such as Orajel
•  Take over-the-counter pain medication like acetaminophen
•  Avoid eating hard foods that can irritate the area
•  Place a cold compress on the painful area
•  Use an ice pack
•  Rinse with salt water made with one teaspoon of salt and about ½
•  cup of warm water
•  Rub crushed garlic on the tooth and gums

Having a toothache can be very uncomfortable and painful. Your tooth could become sensitive to hot or cold foods or temperatures, and you could feel shooting pain in your nerves.

But there are steps you can take at home to help with the pain until we can treat you and fill that cavity. Once one of our dentists takes care of you, the pain will be gone. It is essential that you see us twice a year to avoid having any pain because of cavities.
