Tongue Bradshaw Family Dental AZ 86314Your tongue may be just a small part of your body, but do you know how hard working it is and how each tongue is unique for each individual?

Just like your heart, your tongue is a muscle that works hard because it is working at all times, even when you sleep your tongue works by moving your saliva forward down your throat. The muscles in your tongue work when you talk, eat, and it works like a strainer for germs because of the lingual tonsils it has.

Another important fact that you should know about your tongue is that it has a unique tongue print, just like a fingerprint is. This means that a person's tongue can be used as a way to identify people. Researchers from China have been experimenting with the creation of a database that includes a 3D impression of an individual's tongue.

Tongue Health

Your tongue is the dwelling place to ten thousand taste buds, and it is the part of your body that is exposed to the most bacteria. If you try to feel your tongue with your mouth, you will be able to sense different bumps, and as your tongue is the home to your thousands of taste buds, it can be the home to numerous germs, too.

And in order for you to have a healthy mouth, it is essential that you take really good care of your tongue as well. An unhygienic tongue can be the cause of different dental problems, since your tongue always make contact with your teeth, it can transfer germs and bacteria that can lead to the decaying of your tooth or teeth.

How to Take Care of your Tongue

Maintaining a clean tongue does not only alleviate dental problems, but it can prevent bad breath as well. In order to clean your tongue, you will need to use a tongue cleaner to thoroughly scrape off germs and bacteria.

If you do not know how to clean your tongue, and this is the first time you have heard such as thing, a dental health professional can help guide you.

Even if we are perceived as having as priority the health of people's teeth and gums, the tongue is just as important to us as the two in achieving a generally healthy mouth.
