Why You Still See the Dentist When You Have Dentures

Posted on 4/10/2018 by Candice
Dentures Bradshaw Family Dental AZ 86314Many of those who have no remaining natural teeth and have a full set of dentures have the mistaken belief that it is unnecessary to continue seeing the dentist.

This is not true. There are numerous reasons why it is important to see the dentist at least once per year, even when you eat and speak fine with dentures.

Soft and Hard Tissue Changes

The foundation that supports the dentures is important for stability and comfort. Sufficient bone for supporting the denture and healthy gums is included in ideal oral health. Over time, dentures no longer fit properly due to the changes in both the soft and hard tissues.

It is not uncommon for the denture wearer to be unaware of the changes taken place and for them to become familiar with the use of denture adhesives to ensure the placement of their dentures.

Poor nutrition is often a result of poorly fitting dentures. Without proper fitting dentures, a denture wearer experiences difficulty in consuming healthy foods.

Often, as a result of age, a denture wearer has trouble remaining healthy and lose weight when their dentures no longer fit properly. It is recommended that dentures are worn daily, cleaned correctly, and placed in a cleaning solution overnight.

The tissue located under the denture is examined by the dentist during routine visits. To ensure the proper fit, the denture is adjusted if needed.

An oral cancer screening is also completed at this time, due to oral cancer occurring in the soft tissue of the mouth. Most people who wear dentures are older and at an elevated risk for oral cancer, making this screening particularly important.

A vital factor for ensuring the health of your mouth and dentures as well as overall health includes regular dental visits in addition to proper care. Contact us to find out more about how we can help your overall oral health.
