Connection Between Sleep Deprivation and Cavities

Getting an adequate amount of sleep each night is very important to your long-term health and well-being. Aside from being tired and groggy, sleeping inadequately can result in very serious issues if the situation persists long enough. Long-term health consequences of inadequate sleep can be life-altering.

In addition to the above concerns, if you are not getting enough sleep, you should be aware that you are at greater risk of developing cavities and tooth decay.

This is because it affects your ability to properly clean your teeth, and even contributes to your mouth drying out-which leads to a greater likelihood of cavities.

Sleep and Oral Care

Watch any child struggling to learn how to properly brush his or her teeth and you will soon realize that to do it well requires a significant amount of hand-eye coordination. This simple activity that we often take for granted is actually a highly complex series of motions.

When you are not sleeping well, your coordination is dulled. You may not realize it, but you will have a difficult time properly brushing your teeth, leaving plaque to sit on them. Over time, the plaque will cause issues, including cavities.

Sleep and Yawning

Of course, when you don't sleep enough, you are prone to yawning more often. This is so obvious that it may seem silly to mention it. But here's the thing: all those yawns are actually kind of a big deal in terms of your oral health.

You may not realize it, but when you yawn, it contributes to drying out your mouth. Because an adequate level of saliva is important in fighting cavities, this dried out mouth can lead to elevated instances of tooth decay.

Getting a good night's sleep is important to your oral health. So, make sure that you set aside ample time to get your rest!
