Four Crucial Reasons to Brush before Bed

Posted on 3/13/2016 by Dr. Andrew Zeiger
A woman brushing her teeth to protect her oral health!Your dentist is always telling you to brush twice a day, but is it really a big deal if you brush before bed?

After all, it's not like having bad breath really matters while you are asleep. Well, the answer is yes, and there are a variety of important reasons that you need to clean your teeth before you call it a night.

Get Rid of Accumulating Plaque

Your teeth are introduced to harmful elements all day, ranging from the cup of coffee that you have right away in the morning to the pencil that you chew on during your afternoon staff meeting. That means that a ton of bacteria and germs are accessing your teeth and causing plaque. Get rid of them by brushing before bed.

Reduce the Amount of Plaque that Builds Up While You Are Sleeping

While you are sleeping, saliva won't be washing over your teeth to rid your mouth of plaque, so it is important to get rid of it before you go to bed. This will reduce your risk of damage to your gums and teeth while you are getting your beauty rest.

Prepare for Dry Mouth

When you sleep, your mouth will produce less saliva, providing the perfect environment for plaque bacteria to breed. By brushing before you go to sleep, you'll prepare your teeth for this upcoming dry mouth, and you can remove a lot of the plaque and bacteria that might cause damage.

Feel Fresher in the Morning
Have you ever fallen asleep before you brushed your teeth, only to wake up with a terrible taste in your mouth? Consider what you ate and drank the day before, and remember that all of those food particles were able to sit in your mouth for a full 24 hours. By brushing before bed, you'll be able to clean your teeth so that your mouth feels fresher when you wake up in the morning.
